This illustration was inspired by Marina Keegan’s book of the same name, The Opposite of Loneliness. Keegan said it best when she wrote: "It’s not quite love and it’s not quite community; it’s just this feeling that there are people, an abundance of people, who are in this together. Who are on your team. When the check is paid and you stay at the table. When it’s four a.m. and no one goes to bed. That night with the guitar. That night we can’t remember. That time we did, we went, we saw, we laughed, we felt."

About the artist

Tess Lockey is a storyteller and illustrator born in Hong Kong, raised in the Philippines and now living and working in Brooklyn, New York. She obtained her Bachelor’s at Ringling College of Art and Design, honing her skills while also serving as an orientation leader, student writing consultant, and gallery show curator.
