Mission

The jfa stands for justice for all. The jfa editorial board aims to give “those who have been silenced a platform to raise their voice”. From our conception, we have worked hard to showcase a diversity of media that can present you with multiple, often underrepresented perspectives on some of the most prevalent challenges to justice in our time. Our platform is here to amplify whatever you understand justice to mean, even if this means finding new ways of conceptualising justice itself.

Our editorial proposal is clear: to “discuss, challenge, and review some of the main themes underlying the human rights discourse”. It guides our work from the moment we commission a story to when you get to read it.

Each decision made in that process follows a set of values that remain core to our task and who we are. To us, these values are non-negotiable. We want you to be aware of what they are.

  1. We uphold human rights above all, as established in the 1948 Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We remain critical of the wording of the Declaration and welcome challenges to its limits and interpretations. These rights are non-negotiable.

  2. We believe in journalism as an essential tool of human rights advocacy. As such, all our work, whether it is presented as a news piece, analysis or an opinionated illustration, is committed to being truthful and factual. We do not publish misinformation or alternative facts. We will disclose any and all possible conflicts of interests between our writers and our publication.

  3. Our team believes in equality, justice, and the right to liberty and a dignified life. We are feminists and anti-racists. We do not open our platform to those who defend discrimination against any other person, in any way. Freedom of speech comes hand in hand with our freedom not to platform ideas that reject these values.

  4. Within these principles, we aim to publish a diversity of values and ideas. Our content does not necessarily reflect the opinion of the Editorial Board nor that of our staff and contributors.

  5. We stand behind the scientific method and scientific knowledge as the basis of our common education. We welcome positions that challenge mainstream scientific thought when they are grounded in facts: we seek out intellectual honesty. We are open to the idea of changing our minds upon new discoveries and information, but we know the climate emergency is not a hoax.

  6. We believe in holding ourselves accountable to our readers first and foremost. Our editorial line does not depend on our sources of funding. We believe in financial transparency as a means to ensure our work is conducted fairly.*

  7. We welcome challenges to the content we share, and we reserve the right to delete these comments if they are insulting or defamatory.

*Without prejudicing or defending a particular view just because it is supporting us with funds.
